Abstract

Relevance. Methane and toxic gases (carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, radioactive emanations, etc.), deoxygenated air accumulate in the mined space of the closed coal mines. Aim. When mines are liquidated by flooding them (the so-called “wet” method), mine gases, one way or another, are displaced to the surface where they can serve both as a technogenic mineral and as a source of increased household and industrial danger. Methods. Currently recommended procedures to prevent methane penetration into buildings and structures: continuous ventilation, cementation of floors and basements, degassing by ditches and wells near buildings have a variable effect and do not guarantee safety due to a change in the nature of the movement of gas masses as a result of a subsequent increase in the surface of flooding of mine workings. In general, in the Eastern Donbas, it would be possible to organize coal gas production in the amount of 100 million m3/year, which would provide environmentally friendly fuel or electricity to all villages around closed gas coal mines and create jobs for former miners. Results. In particular, the calculation of the average intensity of gas emission per 1 m2 of the mined area of the mining allotment is given. The above calculation was made for the mining and geological values of the Eastern Donbas, which is mainly dominated by more gentle inclination angles of formations, low thickness of rock strata, the density of methane resources corresponds to 125 million m3/km2. It is worth noting that the Pechora basin has a density 1.5 times higher, and the Kuznetsk basin – 3 times more, and often reaches up to 10 times, but already at steep angles of incidence and multi-meter thickness of the beds, which means that the danger of gas saturation of buildings and structures in the mining allotment zone closed and flooded mine will be much higher. To date, the threat of gas contamination of buried buildings in the worked-out areas is declining, but the main problem is not excluded – the release of underground mine water to the surface and pollution of the hydraulic network with highly mineralized water.
