Abstract

Relevance. Establishing the connection between geodynamic processes and geological and geophysical monitoring data remains an urgent task. The most well-known and well studied are the phenomena associated with changes in the stress-strain state of rocks, which affects the state of the underground hydrosphere and atmosphere. Despite the large volume of radon studies, no reliable regularities of behavior of radon volumetric activity related to the process of seismic event preparation have been revealed so far. Purpose of the study. The aim of the work is to study the peculiarities of the radon field changes (variations of soil radon volumetric activity) during the preparation of a tectonic earthquake in seismically active regions with different geological and tectonic conditions. Methods. Radon monitoring was carried out in the mode of forced delivery of soil radon to the detector. The interpretation was carried out according to the methodology developed based on the results obtained for the conditions of the subduction zone. Results. The analysis of variations in the volumetric radon activity (VRA) in the preparation of earthquakes obtained during monitoring observations in regions of Russia with different geodynamic activity has been performed. The cause-and-effect relationship of the variations of the VRA with the earthquake preparation process has been confirmed. It is established that the obtained patterns of manifestation in the curves of the volumetric radon activity of the earthquake preparation process do not contradict the previously obtained ones. Errors in the organization of observations using the mode of forced delivery of radon to the detector have been studied and generalized. It is shown that in order to obtain reliable results that make it possible to compare the obtained patterns of VRA behavior, it is necessary to take into account the geological conditions of station installation and follow the measurement procedure in the mode of forced delivery of soil radon to the detector.
