Abstract

Relevance. The Greater Caucasus is a seismically active region, and the hypocenters of strong earthquakes are usually localized within the consolidated earth’s crust, which determines the relevance of the relationship studies between the features of its structure and the patterns of the seismic process. Aim. The aim of the work is to study the relationship between the structures of the Central segment Greater Caucasus consolidated crust, identified based on the analysis and synthesis of geological and geophysical materials, and the nature of its seismicity. Research methods. The analysis of the earthquake epicenters localization in the Greater Caucasus Central segment in relation to faults and blocks of the consolidated crust was carried out. Based on the processing of data from the catalogs of the FIC UGC RAS for the period 2001–2021 of the Greater Caucasus meganticlinorium Central segment and adjacent territories, using the ArcGIS system, the distribution schemes of the density of earthquake epicenters with Ms≥2.5 were constructed and analyzed. The features of the distribution density of earthquake hypocenters in the profile strip which crossing the Central segment in its eastern part were also studied. Results. As a result of the analysis, it was established that the most active seismogenic structures of the Greater Caucasus are high-density blocks of consolidated crust and interblock faults that limit them. When analyzing the changes in the density of distribution of earthquake hypocenters in the profile strip of the eastern part of the Central segment over 5-year periods, a significant discrepancy was noted in the nature of these changes in the southern part of the profile, representing the northern flank of the Transcaucasian plate, and its northern part, representing the southern flank of the Scythian plate. The Svaneti-Alazani interplate fault zone in this area is practically aseismic.
