Seismicity of the Azov-Black Sea segment of the junction zone of the East European platform and the Scythian plate
Abstract
Earthquakes within the Plain Crimea and the northern waters of the Black and Azov Seas have been recorded by instrumental methods since the end of the last century. The number and intensity of these earthquakes were much lower than within the main South Coast zone of the Crimean-Black Sea region. Therefore, the seismicity of this area was not taken into account when assessing the seismic hazard of the Crimean territory. With the development of the Crimean seismic monitoring network, it became possible to record weak earthquakes and significantly expand the catalog of events in the Plain Crimea and adjacent waters. In addition, 10 years ago, fundamental research was conducted in Crimea to study the deep structure of the region along the DOBRE-5 deep seismic sounding profile. As a result of these studies, the spatial position of the boundary of the East European Platform and the Scythian Plate was clarified. Obtaining new seismological and geological-geophysical information determined the relevance of research aimed at identifying the relationship of local seismicity with the features of the deep structure and the main tectonic structure of the region - the boundary of the East European platform and the Scythian plate. The aim of the research was to determine the structural position of local earthquakes and identify the relationship of regional seismogenesis with the structural features and activation of the junction zone of platforms of different ages. The research methods were based on the provisions of a comparative analysis of seismicity and spatial-kinematic features of the main rupture geostructures of the region. The factual basis of the research was seismic observation data from the archive of the Institute of Seismology and Geodynamics of the “V.I. Vernadsky Crimean Federal University” on earthquakes in Northern Crimea and adjacent areas of the Black and Azov Seas. As a result of the research it was established that earthquake sources localized within the given territory are confined to one of the main geostructures of the region – to the junction zone of the East European platform and the Scythian plate. A significant number and position of these earthquakes determined the possibility of identifying manifestations of local seismicity in the form of a separate – North Crimean seismogenic zone.
