Coal mining slagheaps as a component of urbanized landscapes in the Eastern part of Donets coal basin (for example, Shakhty city district, Rostov region)
Abstract
The relevance of this research is determined by the need to study the current role of coal mining slag heaps within the urban ecosystems of the Eastern part of Donets coal basin. It is important for the rational development and reclamation of territories and landscapes that have undergone technogenic transformation and environmental impact. The territory of the Donets coal basin is a region of accumulated environmental damage, which is caused by the long-lasting industrial development of coal deposits, mainly by underground mining. An additional impact was made by the subsequent restructuring of the coal mining industry, which led to the closure of many coal mines without carrying out a full range of reclamation works. The aim of the study is to determine the extent of the impact of the existing coal industry slag heaps located within the Shakhty city district, which is the largest settlement in the Eastern part of Donets coal basin and one of the centers of the Eastern Donets urban agglomeration. The methods include interpreting remote sensing data, constructing a geoinformatic system based on satellite and cartographic materials, visual and computational determining of the parameters of individual slag heaps, and calculating of the approximate deluvium volume for objects identified. Open source data, including multispectral and true colour satellite imagery, topographic maps, and open geoinformation databases, were used as research materials. Results. The main forms of environmental impact of slag heaps on the urban landscape were identified including direct physical and chemical impact and changes in the spatial city structure, its adaptation to anthropogenic relief. The factors related to the aesthetic role of slag heaps in the urban environment and their historical significance for the mining region are also important. Existing coal industry slag heaps within the Shakhty city district have been identified. Their characteristics, such as area, configuration, presence of developed vegetation cover and reclamation status have been determined.
