Abstract

Relevance. The liquidation of coal mining enterprises leads to a deterioration in the geo-ecological situation, which affects not only the mined-out area but also the surrounding territories. As a result of the cessation of mining operations at the Vergelevskaya mine near Lugansk, there has been a transformation of the underground and surface hydrosphere. This, in turn, has led to changes in the volume of runoff and significant alterations in the hydrodynamic characteristics of the mined-out massif. Therefore, it is necessary to determine more accurately the nature of the transformation of the hydrosphere in the areas of liquidation of coal mines using the flooding method, as exemplified by the Vergelevskaya mine, and to assess the extent of its impact on the geoecological state of the mountain massif, underground water bodies, and surface water bodies. Aim. The purpose of the study is to establish the nature of the transformation of the hydrosphere in the areas of "wet" liquidation of coal mines and to assess the extent of its impact on the geo-ecological state of the mountain massif, underground water bodies, and surface water bodies. Material and methods. The material for this study was obtained from the results of surveys and observations conducted by the author in 2024–2025, as well as from production reports of geological enterprises and reports of the Main Directorate for Mine Restructuring, and from literature data. In addition to standard methods of geo-ecology, hydrogeology, hydrology, and geography, mathematical methods of processing satellite data were also used. Results. Data on water inflows and the state of underground water outlets in mine workings and quarries were collected and analyzed, including through the analysis of satellite images of the Earth’s surface. The characteristics of geomechanical processes and hydrogeological phenomena in the Vergelevskaya mine field were provided for the period from 1953 to 2025. The state of water-saturated rock masses and the hydrodynamic changes in surface and underground runoff were analyzed in the context of the cessation of coal mining. It was established that the main factor in the transformation of rock masses in the area under consideration is water saturation. The combination of open-pit and underground mining methods within the same mine field, which is a self-regulating system after the cessation of coal mining, poses a risk of accidental redistribution of underground and surface runoff.
