Assessment of hydrocarbon potential of the middle miocene deposits in the Western Middle Caspian Sea based on basin modeling
Abstract
Relevance. The Middle Miocene (Karagan-Chokrak) complex in the western offshore area of the Middle Caspian remains significantly less studied than the coeval onshore deposits and the offshore Mesozoic horizons. Meanwhile, the hydrocarbon potential of this stratigraphic interval in the region has already been proven. This discrepancy underscores the urgent need for its comprehensive study. Aim. The aim of this work is a comprehensive assessment of the petroleum potential of the Middle Miocene deposits in the western Middle Caspian Sea, including the identification of patterns governing the formation and spatial distribution of hydrocarbon accumulations, as well as the localization of generation sources within the Meso-Cenozoic sedimentary succession based on basin modeling. Materials and Methods. The study integrates approximately 18,000 line-km of 2D CDP seismic data, well logs, and published and archival geological, geophysical, geochemical, and field production materials. Two-dimensional basin modeling along composite onshore–offshore cross-sections was performed using PetroMod software. Results. Modeling results define the boundaries of hydrocarbon generation sources for the principal source rock intervals (SRI), reconstruct the regional thermal evolution history, and delineate probable fluid migration pathways. The highest catagenetic maturity is associated with the axial zone of the Sulak Depression (Dagestan, Russia). Mesozoic source rocks (except Triassic) retain their generative potential under present-day conditions; Cenozoic source rocks (except Karaganian) have entered the main oil generation window. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the differentiated assessment of the generative potential of the principal Meso-Cenozoic SRI, the refinement of generation kitchen boundaries, and the predictive mapping of prospective target zones of various trap types within the Middle Miocene deposits of the western Middle Caspian offshore. Conclusions. The western Middle Caspian offshore possesses all essential geological conditions for the formation of hydrocarbon accumulations of various types. Priority exploration targets within the Middle Miocene succession are lithologically and tectonically sealed traps in the Chokrakian and Karaganian deposits.
