Abstract

Relevance. The coastal cliffs of the Chersonesos Taurica ancient settlement are subject to the development of hazardous geological processes, leading to coastal degradation and posing a threat to the preservation of cultural and historical heritage sites. Substantiation of coastal protection measures requires detailed engineering-geological information on the structure and condition of the rocky massif, as well as localization of weakened zones affecting cliff stability. The complex conditions of the study object, represented by a coastal cliff rock massif, determine the necessity of applying a set of geophysical methods based on 3D seismic tomographic sounding technology. The aim of the study is to localize concealed weakened zones within the rock massif of the coastal cliff of the Chersonesos Taurica ancient settlement that control the development of hazardous geological processes. The conducted integrated engineering-geophysical surveys included the research methods: ground-penetrating radar sounding, non-contact electrical resistivity tomography, and the innovative method of 3D seismic tomographic sounding. The acquired data were inverted, and depth slices and 3D models of electrical resistivity distribution, P- and S-wave velocities, and dynamic elastic moduli were constructed. Results. Based on the integrated interpretation of geophysical data, weakened zones associated with disruption of the limestone armoring layer and the development of detachment cracks were localized. A spatial correspondence of anomalies identified by electrical resistivity tomography, ground-penetrating radar, and seismic tomography was established. The most hazardous areas are characterized by reduced P- and S-wave velocities and decreased dynamic elastic moduli, posing a threat to cliff stability and nearby structures. The high efficiency of the STP 3D methodology for investigating coastal cliffs and assessing the factors controlling their stability is demonstrated.
