Abstract

Obtaining reliable information on the seismic resistance of existing buildings is currently urgent issue. This primarily applies to buildings consisting of multi-apartment buildings constructed between the 1960s and 1980s. The aim of this study is to identify the most important features of the behavior of residential buildings and structures under natural and anthropogenic impacts that are not taken into account by the by current Building Codes, which precludes consideration of parameter changes when setting “critical valuesˮ at the design stage. Methods. Experimental research allows for the most reliable determination of the safe potential of a building, structure, or any physical system under seismic, dynamic, and other loads. This necessitated the use of the results of monitoring object movements caused by natural and anthropogenic impacts. Results. An overview of the development of engineering seismometric networks is provided, and the specifics of station installation are considered, based not only on the characteristics of building structures but also on the specifics of soil conditions. The need for building certification, where the most important tasks are assessing the actual seismic resistance of existing structures and the degree of deterioration, should be based on modern monitoring technologies with centralized data collection. This is essential for improving the regulatory framework and cost-effectively instrumental surveys of large numbers of buildings
