MineralogiCal and petrographiC zoning of roCks of burning waste heaps of the Eastern Donbass
Abstract
Relevance. Coal mining waste has been identified as a promising secondary raw material; how- ever, its utilization is largely constrained by the diversity and variability of mineral composition present within the volume of rock dumps. Aim. The aim of the work is to determine the mineralogical and petrographic zonality in the waste rock dumps from the coal mines of the Eastern Donbass. Materials and Methods. The study of the material composition was carried out by the methods of electron-probe studies and X-ray phase analysis. Results. The present paper sets out the findings of a study into the mineralogical and petrological characteristics of the burnt rocks present within the slag heaps of Eastern Donbass. These rocks are of a sandy-clay lithological type. About 25% of the waste dumps burn due to exothermic destruction of sulphides with release of sulphur and oxidation of coal particles. Significant part of them is burnt out, which leads to transformations in the mineral composition of rocks, contributing to the removal of some harmful components (sulphides, etc.), increasing the homogeneity of the petrographic composition and physical properties of rocks, as well as the appearance of a number of new properties. Among pyrometamorphic rocks, zones with characteristic mineral associations are distinguished as they move away from the burning core. The high-temperature inner zone (temperature above 1200-1500 °C) is characterized by the paragenesis of mullite + quartz, cristobalite, tridymite (rocks are often glassy, with traces of melting and flow). The lower-temperature zone (formation temperature from ~800-900 °C to ~1200-1500 °C) is characterized by the paragenesis of cordierite + quartz + tridymite + mullite (pseudomullite); the lowest-temper- ature zone is characterized by the paragenesis of mullite + quartz (relict structural and textural features are often preserved in poorly processed rocks). The unaltered rocks are distinguished by the presence of muscovite and hydrous mica, chlorite, quartz, and feldspar. In certain samples, nacrite, and occasionally dolomite or siderite, are also present. The absence of significant structural and mineral pyrometamorphic transformations in the unaltered rocks is attributed to a high degree of catagenetic transformation. In the surface and near-surface parts of heaps, fumarole formations (sulfate crusts of gypsum and magnesium-aluminum-ammonium types) and ‘‘black blocks” with asphalt-like crust (high-carbonaceous rocks with anhydrous magnesium, aluminum, ammonium and potas- sium sulfates, ammonium and sulfur) are present. These owe their origin to pneumatolitic processes.
