Abstract

Relevance. Gully erosion is one of the main negative exogenous processes in the forest-steppe zone of the Russian Plain. In the conditions of agricultural intensification, constant monitoring and forecasting of its development is required. In the article the authors try to show an approach to modeling erosion by the method of smoothed multilevel estimation of territory susceptibility. The aim of the study is to develop a new method for estimating gully erosion development based on machine learning. The proposed technology gives more accurate results on the assessment of the territory susceptibility to gully erosion, compared to a number of classical approaches. Its undoubted advantage is the possibility of application for analyzing large territories with high unevenness of gully distribution. Methods. The key research methods were: modeling based on machine learning and geoinformation modeling. One of the most modern methods of machine learning CatBoost, which is the basis of the developed approach, was widely used in the development. Its main feature is combining several models solving different problems into one stronger one. Results. The realization of the method of smoothed multilevel estimation of territory susceptibility to gully erosion is illustrated on the example of forest-steppe of Kalachskaya upland (Vorobyevsky district, Voronezh region). Similarities and differences of the proposed approach with already existing methods are considered. Two new metrics for evaluating the accuracy of the proposed method - RF1 (modified random forest) and NDF - are justified, and the corresponding formulas are given. The concepts of external, internal and regularization levels of modeling are introduced, and the practical sense of using each of them to solve the problem is illustrated. The use of the approach of smooth multilevel estimation of territory susceptibility to gully erosion taking into account a block of special geomorphological factors and derivatives of them on the basis of digital elevation model FABDEM v1-2 is substantiated. The proposed technology showed high accuracy of gully erosion description (0.95) and can be applied to analyze other territories.
